The VA Connection: Your Time is Valuable

When you’re a Virtual Assistant who’s not making money or hitting your financial goals, it seems commonsensical to wait until you’re making money to invest in your business.

Even if you have money to invest from your job or savings, you feel the business needs to deserve the investment by being able to pay for it.

What you really might be thinking is that you don’t deserve to invest in yourself until you’ve proven yourself.

The problem with this train of thought is that it doesn’t consider the money you’re losing while waiting for money to start flowing in.

Here’s an example:

  • You want to attend a networking event to spread the word about your business, and you need a business card

  • You don’t know how to design a card, are terrible with graphics, and the thought of doing this yourself makes you break out in hives

  • You haven’t made any money yet, so you can’t justify spending money on a graphic designer who could create the card for you

  • You decide you have to do it yourself, but you’re spinning your wheels, second-guessing your ability, and procrastinating

  • This delays attending networking events for weeks or months while you wait to make money before you invest in the business card

  • You stay stuck, feel discouraged, and wonder if you’ve got what it takes to make this work

Or you could do this instead:

  • Hire a graphic designer to create your business cards; pay them $200

  • Start attending networking events immediately

  • Make connections and get clients, charging them $50 an hour for your services

  • Build momentum and bill 10 hours a week, bringing in $2,000 a month working part-time

  • Have a thriving business and feel great about your success

It’s important to realize that wasted time has as much value as billable time; the difference is that you don’t reap the financial rewards waiting for you when you stay stuck.

To get into action, ask yourself what’s keeping you from taking the next step in your business journey right now. Then, reevaluate whether investing makes sense with your newfound understanding of the value of your time.

If you’re going to bet on something, bet on your success. You’ve got what it takes.
